Good to know
This is the one product we sell that needs actual maintenance, and almost every problem people report is limescale rather than a fault. Use distilled or previously boiled water if you can — in most of the UK, tap water will fur up the ultrasonic disc within a couple of weeks and the mist will weaken or stop. A ten-minute vinegar clean every few weeks keeps it working for years.
Frequently asked questions
It has stopped producing mist. Is it broken?
Almost certainly not. Nine times out of ten the ceramic disc in the base has furred up. Unplug it, fill the reservoir with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, leave it 20–30 minutes, then work a cotton bud gently over the disc and rinse three times. That fixes most cases.
Can I use tap water?
You can, but it will need cleaning much more often and it will leave fine white mineral dust on nearby surfaces. Distilled or cooled boiled water roughly triples the interval between cleans.
Can I put essential oils in it?
Yes, two or three drops. Clean it more frequently if you do — oil residue is stickier than limescale. If you have cats in the room, check which oils are appropriate first, as several common ones are not suitable around them.
Is it noisy?
No fan, so no fan noise. There is a very faint ultrasonic hum and the sound of trickling water, which most people find pleasant and a light sleeper might not.
How often should I empty it?
Every time you finish with it. Standing water is what makes a humidifier smell, and it is the single habit that determines how long the unit lasts.
