The test we apply before stocking anything here: does it replace a job you already do by hand, or is it another object for the drawer? Everything below passes the first test.

How to choose

For prep: the Prep Master 12-in-1 slicer covers slicing, dicing, julienne and grating with a catch basket underneath, and the Whetstone sharpener does the unglamorous job that makes every other knife task easier.

For lunch at work: the Warmbox heated lunch container is cordless, so it works in a van or on a site with no plug. The Warmkeeper insulated set is the no-electronics version.

For the small daily annoyances: the Splashguard sink shield catches the spray around a tap and drains it back, and the Stir self-mixing mug removes the teaspoon from the equation entirely.

Frequently asked questions

Are these dishwasher safe?

The slicer blades and basket, the sink splash guard and the stainless steel lunch containers are all dishwasher safe. Anything with a motor or a battery — the self-stirring mug and the heated lunch box — is hand-wash only, and the electronic base should never go in water.

How long does a heated lunch box keep food warm?

It is not a flask, it is a heater. The Warmbox actively warms food using its own battery at four temperature settings, so it reheats a cold meal rather than just slowing it down. Battery life depends on which setting you use — the lower settings run considerably longer.

Is a mandoline slicer safe to use?

The blades are genuinely sharp, which is the point. Always use the hand guard supplied, never freehand the last few centimetres of anything, and store it with the blade guard on. Keep it away from children.

Which of these makes a good Secret Santa gift?

The knife sharpener and the self-stirring mug, both comfortably under budget. The sharpener in particular is one of those things people are quietly glad to be given but would never buy themselves.

What is the best gadget for a first flat?

The sink splash guard and the slicer set. Neither is exciting, both get used within the first week, and together they cost less than a takeaway.
